# SD Recording and Playback

Access the SD recorder by tapping the SD icon on the lower left corner of the display. The first screen offers transport controls. The current session and total number of sessions are displayed in the lower-right corner. If the SD card contains more than 99 sessions, only the current session number is shown.

To avoid card fragmentation, it is recommended to format the SD card directly on the FLOW 4V before starting a new series of recordings.

If a recording is interrupted due to a power loss, leave the SD card inserted and turn the device back on. Wait until the sessions on the SD card have fully loaded before removing the card from the FLOW 4V.

## Recording

While in the Recorder section, swipe to access the screen to record-enable individual channels.

Only record-enabled sources are written to the SD card; anything not record-enabled is omitted from the recording. When the main mix is record-enabled, it occupies the first two tracks, followed by the individual record-enabled channels in channel-number order.

SD recording can be configured in the Settings section with the following parameters:

* 24 BIT FIXED or 32 BIT FLOAT
* RAW INPUT or PROCESSED

USB recording has its own RAW INPUT / PROCESSED setting, described in Signal Routing. The USB bit depth is selected on the computer.

The dual-stage preamp design allows a large amount of digital trim to be applied in post-production while the noise floor remains negligible, even at 24 BIT FIXED.

When recording raw inputs, a considerable amount of digital trim will be needed in post-production, depending on the microphone. To record at a louder level, switch to PROCESSED and adjust the channel trim as desired. At 24 BIT FIXED this increases the risk of clipping; 32 BIT FLOAT removes that risk.

## Playback

The SD PLAYBACK screen selects which signals are played back from the SD card: either the individual channels or the main mix. If only individual channels or only the main mix were recorded, the toggle switches to the respective position.

During playback, each recorded channel is routed to its corresponding input channel on FLOW 4V. The main mix is sent directly to the main bus. The main mix is always recorded with its processing applied, so main mix processing is bypassed during playback to avoid processing the signal twice.

When playing back a session recorded with the PROCESSED setting, channel processing is temporarily disabled for the same reason. Sessions recorded with the RAW INPUT setting play back through the channel processing.

## Markers

To add markers while recording in Free Run Timecode mode, press the Record button. To add markers while recording in Time of Day or Rec Run Timecode modes, press the Play button (in these modes the Record button is assigned to another function). See Transport Controls for details.

To add markers during playback, turn the multi-purpose knob to the right of the display to select the on-screen marker button (blue), then press the knob. Markers added during playback are readable only in FLOW 4V and the LiveSessions tool.

To delete a marker, pause playback and navigate to the marker. When the playback position aligns with the marker, the marker button switches to a delete function. Each session can contain up to 99 markers.

## LiveSessions

Use the LiveSessions desktop app to convert the multi-track WAV file recorded on FLOW 4V into individual single-channel WAV files.

The markers created during recording are embedded into the individual WAV output files and readable by any video or audio editing software.

LiveSessions also allows for trimming of WAV files.

## Back-up to USB Flash Drive

When a USB flash drive is inserted into the USB-A port, a backup of the SD card recording will be made each time recording is stopped.

**Warning:** Do not remove the storage media, SD card or USB drive, while the "busy" sign on the display is indicating read/write activity. Interrupting the closure of files may result in unusable or lost recordings.

## Timecode Modes

Swipe right while in the Settings section to access the TIMECODE screen. Three modes are available:

* REC RUN: The timecode runs only when recording and restarts with each new recording.
* TIME OF DAY: The timecode matches the current date and time. Tap the time or date to adjust the internal clock.
* FREE RUN: timecode runs continuously. Tap on the gear icon to access the following options:
  * 00:00:00:00: set the timecode manually
  * SEND a timecode synchronization signal to the STEREO OUT, for jam-syncing other units. While SEND is active, the timecode signal replaces the MAIN MIX at the STEREO OUT connector.
  * RECEIVE an incoming SMPTE timecode signal on the tip connector of the AUX IN.

## Transport Controls

The behavior of the transport controls depends on the Timecode Mode and Pre-Roll settings.

When Pre-Roll is enabled, the five seconds preceding the moment the Record button is pressed are included in the recording.

### **Free Run / Time of Day**

* Pre-Roll is not active
  * Pressing the Record button while the transport is stopped starts the recording. The button lights up solid red to indicate active recording.
  * Pressing the Play button while recording creates a new marker.
  * Pressing the Stop button stops the recording.
* Pre-Roll is active:
  * Pressing the Record button starts the pre-roll period. The button blinks red to indicate the pre-roll is running.
  * Pressing the Record button during the pre-roll period starts the recording. The button lights up solid red to indicate active recording.
  * Pressing the Stop button stops the pre-roll and recording.

* Pre-Roll is not available
  * Pressing the Record button while the transport is stopped starts the recording. The button lights up solid red to indicate active recording.
  * Pressing the Record button while recording pauses the recording and creates a new marker. The button blinks to indicate that the recording is paused.
  * Pressing the Record button while the recording is paused starts the recording again. The button lights up solid red to indicate active recording.
  * Pressing the Play button while recording creates a new marker.
  * Pressing the Stop button stops the recording.
